Looking at the "Best light fixture ever" thread, I want to upgrade the lighting in a basement storage room so it can become a project space. The ceiling is 9' with open I-joists (engineered joists).
It looks like 1x4 Flat Panels are the way to go. Two questions:
Is there any reason why I need to have a mounting kit?
The mounting kit is crazy expensive for a $35 light fixture. I'm thinking of just putting a poplar or pine 2x3 (or 1x3) across the joists like this:

Looking across the stud bay, I'd just add a stopper block to each of the 2x3s, like so.

This could easily be held together with a couple of screws (as shown) or pocket-hole screws. Is that the way to go? It's an unfinished space, the appearance should be "good enough".
How precise does the ceiling box placement need to be for these things?
I know that I need a ceiling box that's made for a joist cavity, like this:
The length of the legs is adjustable.
So I just screw the blocks in place, place the LED panel in place on them, and then "dry fit" where the box should go? Adjust the box left-to-right, up-down, mark it, take the panel down and then screw it in . . . . right?
