Good morning folks,
New guy here - I've been lurking now and then and like the atmosphere here although its a bit more polite than I'm used to. But hey, I can play nice and if you want to see all the photos you have to login, so here I am.
My garage is swimming around in my mind, on various hard drives and on 5 sets of 24 x 36 digitally printed drawings currently circulating amongst the hard working trades that built this great city. In other words, it's not built yet.
I've lived at this address for 39 years. It's time to build a garage. Here are the reasons:
1. Because I want one.
2. My business is making other people's garages look pretty and sometimes the question comes up: "So what did you use in YOUR garage?"
3. My current storage area is only 42" above high tide. It floods a lot and is a major pain. We need to move to a higher plain.
4. Developers built a whole subdivision around my property (it was a former waterfront trailer park which is like setting an ice cream sundae in front of a 5 year old). So now I'm the only weird looking house on the street. Being civic minded I'd like to improve the street appearance a bit.
5. We've got plenty of room, the lot is 131 feet wide and the house only takes up 30 feet of the front left corner.
So I employed at great cost, an architect who could pull all my ideas together. We actually designed a new living room, kitchen, and master bedroom as well as a detached garage. The budget is very tight right now so luckily the garage can be done as phase one and the rest later. I didn't deliberately design it that way but it works.
When I get a little further into the project I'll start a thread in the Gallery with photos etc.
Concerning my business, Park Place Garage:
I've been doing garage interiors for about 5 years now. I sold a Corian counter top business that wasn't quite enough to retire on and I needed to start another business (I'm mostly unemployable to the business community at large). Five years ago the concept was pretty new - I had seen a Gladiator Garage ad in This Old House Magazine and thought, "hell, I could do that". My internet search of the subject led me to Marc Loberg of Premier Garage. He was just starting to expand his business beyond Phoenix and was looking for dealers. I was very impressed with him and the company but because I had just survived a brutal "business divorce" and I didn't want to be tied to any kind of control. Being the rugged individualist I am, I decided to go it alone.
Marc, OK you were right, I would be miles ahead business wise if I had become a Premier Garage franchise but it turned out OK
So there you have it. Garages are great. They can be morphed into all kinds of different uses. My customers are mostly Doctor's Wives who need more storage and are tired of the clutter. God bless them. The Journal is more Man Cave oriented which is cool too. I couldn't make a living off you guys but it's fun to see what people do with the space they have.
