I'm just starting the lighting design for my newly built 28x28 garage (710 sf inside). I have a hipped roof with a vaulted ceiling inside. I would prefer to use flush-mounted lights. The ceiling will probably be PVC soffit material.
My question concerns orientation of the lights. My truss layout is shown in the pictures below. In one, I show the 2x2 foot troffer light from Lowes for $37 each (similar one at HD, but not on their web page)

This uses 2 U-shaped T8 bulbs at 2650 lumens, so to get 100 lumens/sf I need 13 lights. I used blue and pink to show two different circuits.
I will have to ensure that these lights will fit inside my 2 foot on-center trusses (22.5 inches clearance)
In the other layout, I use 4 foot lights such as these from HD, which people here speak highly of, which are $50 each

This uses 2 straight 4 foot T8 bulbs, at 2850 lumens, so I need 12 lights. I've shown this in this plan:
Something in my brain tells me that the lights should run parallel to the way the cars are parked, but with both banks on, and considering the ceiling 9-10 feet up and is sloped about 15 degrees, it certainly looks like I should get good coverage from either layout. The glossy Wolverine floor and PVC soffit ceiling both help as well.
I just wondered if anyone has any opinions on the straight tubed light versus the lights with the U-shaped bulbs, and what you think of my lighting layout. I realize the cost of the U-shaped bulb is more, but the overall difference is about $100 (Geeze, I didn't realize this project was going to cost me $700).
