Garage addition and makeover

I'am in the process of building an addition on to my 2 car 1950's surburban garage. after looking at many builds and ways to do things on this site. I did a rendering in google sketch up(a great program by the way) then i studied the town garage codes. I drew my plans in autocad and submitted them to the village for a permit. It passed on the first try! after the stone was put in for a monolithic pour as they required, they red tagged me until the village could take soil samples!! then we had 3 weekends of rain to ruin doing any concrete work. finnally got it done and building put up. finishing up the doors right now which are reproductions of a 1926 sears catalog garage door.i was able to photograph and dimension a set of original ones down the street from my house. the neighborhood and surrounding area is full of historic homes and many are restored and spared from the evil land developers that seem to lurk everywhere. the garage makeover is next and that will happen over the winter. putting in bigger electric service, insulating and paneling, and making a comfortable work atmosphere to work on my cars and bikes and work with my automotive machine shop equipment.

Are you going to open it up into the main garage or us it to put your machine equipment in ?

Nice looking addition! It blends with the old garage very well. I am thinking about doing something similar myself. I have a 24 x 26 finished garage and would like to add about 8 additional feet onto it for a storage area and wood shop (24 x 8). My other thought was to just put up a shed if an addition was too costly however an addition is my preferred choice.

What size is your addition and compared to the cost of a shed do you think it was feasible? What do you think you will have invested in it when completed?

Is that an old Nova in the garage?

The addition is 12x12 with a concrete pad. i'am thinking of opening main garage into addition as i will be putting in my wood working machines in the addition. right now it is home to my tractor and snowblower and bicycles as my family cannot be trusted around my cars and bikes. my thought on a shed versus an addition was simple. although you will spend a little more money the addition is a better choice. a: it looks better b: the shed kits i've looked at are marginal as far as quality goes. c: an addition is your own and you really don't want to be like everyone else do you? that old nova is a 67 sedan being reassembled after paint. it is a street car that i plan to race a little. inline 6 with a 5 speed stick for power.

finished up my garage doors last sunday. next is paint. these represent a garage door from the 1920's this was a great experience as i have never done a wood working job like this before. built the doors and jamb from scratch. they took a lot of hours but you can't run down to the local home center and buy these.

I don't know where you are located geography wise, but you might want to stick a board behind one of the door running vertical to keep any weather from blowing through the door gap. Rain or snow
