Garage Door Opener Question

I haven't used my garage door opener in a little over a year when it failed. Then I discovered it was just a worn out gear which I replaced. Now I'm having sensor issues. The door only closes when I hold the button down for the duration. The remote won't close it at all. The Sending sensor light shows but the Receiving sensor light does not. When I switch sides with them the Sending sensor light does not show (bad wires?) but neither does the Receiving sensor light (bad sensor?). This is an old Craftsmans opener and new sensors are $50+. Before I replace them, could it just be bad wires on the one side and is that something I can get at a hardware store? Or if I need new sensors can I substitute some cheaper sensors (I've seen some for $25) and have them work properly? Thanks for the advice!
