I was able to snag a 20 year old Emerson 5k watt garage heater for free so after looking at it for 6 months and with winter on the way it was time to get it installed. My garage is 20x20 and very well insulated so this should work out great. Total cost out of my pocket was 42 dollars for a breaker, 25 feet of 10/2 (luckily I only needed 24.5 feet) and some lags for mounting. I had some other misc stuff on hand already.
Here is heater mounted to ceiling, pretty close to my workbench which will help.
Picture of the whip coming down from ceiling junction box and over to heater. I deff should have installed a bigger junction box in the ceiling as it was tight with the power feed and the thermostat wiring in there. Had I been smart I would have looked at where this junction box would end up in the attic before I cut the hole for it. Ended up being directly under a vent for HVAC which made it a royal pain to get wires into the box.
Thermostat mounted on the wall in a convenient location for me
30 amp breaker mounted and wired up. Fishing cable through the finished wall into the breaker box ended up being 100x easier then I anticipated considering I fought the run to the the thermostat the whole way.
Drawing 20.4 amps per leg at 243 vac = 4950 watts give or take. I can only imagine the damage this will do to my electric bill once I start running it on weekend for projects and drinking in the garage. During on peak rate times it will be roughly $1 an hour if it runs constantly which it wont. Off peak is 35 cents an hour
