I'm looking for a temporary heater solution to make my garage a little bit warmer when I'm working in it. By temporary, I mean something portable, not a fixed unit. My garage is 30x40x9, fully insulated, with painted drywalled walls and ceiling. I don't think I want anything that burns fuel as it may darken the walls and ceiling. Maybe some sort of infrared heater? I'm not looking for 75* temps, but 60ish would be ok.

If you don't want something that burns fuel electric is pretty much your only option. But for that building your probably going to need 10kw. That would take a 60a circuit making it not very portable.
Propane doesn't meet your no fuel want but it's not going to smoke. Lots of humidity and tanks will be the hassle with those.
I bought one of the newer knipco style heaters a couple weeks ago. Pretty quiet and doesn't stink compared to the old ones. Little puff of smoke when I start it otherwise it's very clean.

You could use a ceiling mounted (or floor standing) infrared heater to warm the areas where you work. Infrared warms the surface where it is pointed, so it would warm you up right away, and eventually warm up a larger area. It can be reasonably comfortable to work without trying to heat the entire garage.
I currently use one or two of the small oil filled electric heaters (looks like a little radiator on wheels) and it works well to bring the temps up in a small garage. I believe they are safer than the space heaters with an exposed heating element, although they still have to be kept away from flammable materials. I picked mine up at estate sales for about $15 each, so I don't have a lot invested.
