Garage stripe question

Hi, newbie here. So after looking at some great garages here, I want to paint and stripe the garage. Went to look for paint colors and I found some 3M brand vinyl tape about 2" wide. Anyone use this or something similar for striping? Is this a good alternative to painting stripes or will it not hold up?

Thanks

I like the idea of using tape. It seems like it would be easier to install. I just wonder if it would stick to a textured wall.

I posed the same question to a member here, Reflexx, who used some 3" or 4" tape, and it looked good initially but it didn't hold up and he was going to have to take it down. I just bought paint for striping my garage yesterday, and even though it will take some more prep work, I think it will be the best way to go. I'll post some pictures when I finally get it all done.

Hey guys, I posted this in my personal thread but thought I would show you what I have done here as well. I used a new product called Frog tape. Just set my laser level at the heights I wanted and made some pencil marks then ran the tape. It didn't stick to well initally to my semigloss walls, but after I got a thin layer of stripe paint(the dark blue) over the edges, it held really well.

Here's a shot of the result.

Looks good! I just saw that Frog tape at the hardware store. Does it work better than the blue painters tape? Cleaner edge?

It does work better in the sense that no paint seeped under neath, and when I pulled it off, left a very clean line. The problem was actually getting it to stick to the wall! My walls are semi-gloss so I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it, but the tape did seem to peel back a bit until I brushed a thin layer of the blue over the edges. I'm pretty happy with it overall for the extra dollar over the blue tape, I think it was worth it IMO.

Re: Garage stripe question

Found this the other day...

http://www.identi-tape.com/vinyltwo.htm

Do you guys think this vinyl tape this will work instead of painting stripes?

It comes in 2, 3 and 4" widths. They even have a checkerboard pattern.

I think this tape would stick with no problem. But it is thick, and won't conform to a wall that isn't smooth. Then paint would give a cleaner edge. For a smooth wall, this would really be quick and easy.

I hadn't seen that product before - have to check it out. Does the tape feel any less tacky than blue or masking tape? I'd think since they are showing demos of using it on glass that gloss or semi-gloss paint wouldn't be a problem.

Maybe it was just operator error! Not really sure. It does feel to be about the same as the blue painters tape It did do what it said it would though. Once I had the tape up it held well and didn't let the paing seep through. I'd use it again, thankfully I'm done painting stripes for quite some time!
