Not a good deal. I'd never buy a 32 space 200 amp panel, too few spaces. Buy 40.

Unless you have a small house...

He said he was installing 200 amp service on his garage and then tapping off of it to run 100 amps to the house (existing panel).

I too prefer a 40 space panel, but I seriously doubt he will come close to filling a 30 space one, most people don't. I have a 40 space in the shop 60x60 building and still have about 15 spaces left, possibly more, I'd have to look.

Isn't it still a 40 circuit panel? You just half to use the half size breakers in the appropriate slots??

If it's a GE like the 8/16 in my shop - yes. The one I have makes you watch the order, IIRC you have to start one side with a thin single then next can be a thin double. I think the thin doubles can only land in the "odd" slots. The regular fat breakers can go in any slot on an even number. A minor puzzle that's easy to work out. The thin breakers are cute and cheap, like $4 a pop and come in all ratings for a nice selection.

To use GE half sized breakers you have to have a panel that will accept them. They have a special type of clip welded to the buss bar. It won't interfere with installing regular breakers, but the half width ones will only fit in those spots. The 30/40 GE panel I put in my parents house had clips on several of the lowest positions on each side. You could fit some other brand of half width pairs in the regular slots. Siemens claims that is legal, but I won't go there.

So yes, its a 40 space panel when using the right breakers and installing them in the right spots.

Well I've been back and forth with this guy sense I posted this . He said he had a death in the family and asked me to wait. I waited a week and a half. Now no answer from him. Guess he's not a man of his word and sold it locally. I don't mind that he sold it but he could have let me know so I wasn't waitng to hear back from him.

That one sounds like a "main lug", vs. a "main breaker" panel. Check to see if it has a main breaker at all. If not, that costs as much as the load center.

Both Home Depot and Lowes sell main breaker load centers that come with a half dozen or so breakers thrown in. I think I paid $49 at Home Depot for the 100A main breaker panel I used in my shop. It came with six 20A breakers.

I am sure that the 200A version they sell is a 40-slot box.

For $130 or so you can get a full 40 space (as opposed to the 30 space/40 circuit ones you have looked at) panel as a "contractor pack" with about 6 or 8 20 amp breakers (120v) and a 30 and a 50 amp double pole (240v), and that is with a main breaker.

The main breaker kits are expensive, something like $60 to $80.
