general pry bar question

Will a pry bar (one that has never been modified) bend first, or just snap first? If it's designed to bend, I don't think I would worry as much about yanking on it. I was pulling on a craftsman bar and was worried it might just shatter or snap in half.

I have never broken one , but have bent a few. I would much rather it bend then break and have pieces (and yourself) go flying in all directions.

I've bent plenty of bars but never broke one. So I would say bend first. Even the S.O. bars will bend a bit

We haven't seen any Craftsman bars come back for breaking "in half", we have seen trashed/broken tips and broken handles, tho.

I've had a S/O handle break on me during normal usage resulting the the bar part hitting me in the head, but never have heard of a bar itself breaking.

You're talking about a pry bar, and not a breaker bar, right?
Doesn't the bar itself extend into the handle? Did the handle slip off of the bar?

Yes and Yes, but in my case my SO prybar handle simply cracked with no abuse and never had a hammer laid to it! I have had very poor luck with several of their handles just either deteriorating, or inexplicebly cracking on their own!

I have noticed they had a bad run on the earlier generation handles that the plastic was defective and they just end up crumbling, falling apart. My Snap-On dealer says the handles are not covered, so I had to end up buying a new handle on my upholstery door panel tool. Anyone had a handle replaced before; are they really not warranted from Snap-On?

I think you would have to be a complete retard to pull off breaking a pry bar.

Ooops:(

I cracked the tip off an orange handled northern tool special. First and only time I have ever seen this happen. Now granted, I was abusing the **** out of these pry bars but still. Ive seen it first hand.

If the tip cracks or suddenly breaks, you could get really hurt. That's what worries me. If it bends, I think that's safer, no?

I guess my Snap-On dealer just makes up his own warranty policies!

That seems to be people's biggest issue with SO (those who like the tools despite the prices).

I've only bent prybars, except for a specialty pry bar SO made for awhile, I broke the tip, but it was a very small tip and I had all my weight on it.

I was using this bar in the yard during the weekend to bust out some tree roots.

I can flex the bar, any worries here? But I kept busting the root instead of prying, I figure I could jump on it but that's only putting my body weight against it which wasn't isn't enough.

The bar is a lifesaver in landscaping..! If one day in the garage my craftsman pry bar can't get my valve cover off, maybe this will :)

now now guys...lets play nice

I broke one in half. almost exactly in half
it was HF version and was the medium sized one. it had little use on it and I was not putting all of the force I could on it (so I did not get hurt). they replaced it and I have used the replacement for years with no trouble (even with more force than the one that broke) so it was an obvious defect.

my snap on bars have seen over 200lbs or force on them with not a hint of trouble

If you carry a balance with mr Snappy, buy a **** load of tools, or are on his route as a regular you will never have a warranty issue (what fool would kill the golden goose?)

With that said if you only buy on occassion, are not on an established route, you don't buy hudreds of dollars of tools at a shot from him, or he does not know you, now you might have a problem.

It will likely not matter that you bought the tool new yada yada yada......save yer story man, he is just not interested. At least that has been my experience. I have tons of poor warranty service stories about Snap-on that still piss me off, and yes the non warrantied million dollar doubles as a ***** screwdriver/prybar handle is certainly one of the ways they screwed me too! I always say at least Sears replaces the whole damned screwdriver and not just the blade...........Snap-on..............chincy Chinese tool importin Bastards! :wtf:

I have to say, my dealer isn't like that. I really must be lucky. He was sorting out somet hings for him when a maintenance looking man asked for him. He said one minute. Me and him were walking out to the truck, the maintenance man walked in, had a old looking locking flex 3/8 ratchet where the locking mechanism had broken. He just grabbed an updated model and handed him a brand new ratchet (and a catalog  ).

properly heat treated and tempered steel bars should reach yield strength and plastically deform. how much weight is still applied after that could easily be enuff to reach ultimate strength and castostrophic failure is eminent.

No doubt, I cannot count the times I have seen guys post that on this board. I think I have a special knack for finding the real dirty birds cause I have found them in different states and towns for over twenty years with virtually the same poor experiences. I guess it is just me!
