Ghostshield on driveway that was previously sealed

I have an exposed aggregate driveway that was previously coated with the attached stuff (previous owner, so the last application was at least a year ago).

It looked good, but made the driveway slippery. I want some protection, but it cannot make it slippery again.

What would I need to do to prep for Ghostshield 8510? Is there something better?

Hi, Ghostshield which we carry, is a 'penetrating' sealer, so if your driveway is sealed and not porous (which is what a sealer should do) then you are not a candidate for GS. GS also is not a slip-reducing product, what it does do is not make the surface any more slippery since it's not topical and penetrates in so the surface retains it's current coefficient of friction.

Our recommendation would be to coat with the Ballistix which we carry (Ballistix will adhere to sealers as long as the surface is properly cleaned) and add the non skid additive to it. It has a much higher slip resistance than anything else we carry without large aggregate that is comparable.

Thanks. What would be "properly cleaned"? Just thoroughly pressure washed or are chemicals needed?

Power washed, let dry, then microfiber clean with our supplies ISO 99% alcohol. The ISO evaporates in minutes so it can be applied right away.

We would suggest you get a small sample kit and test in a corner just to make sure no issues with your sealer and that you are pleased with the finish. We can put this together for you, please call next week.

You really want me to wipe down my driveway with a cloth and alcohol? Feel like my neighbors will never let me live that one down.

Can it be mopped?

We provide a microfiber mop with pads for this. It’s very important to have it clean as possible. If the surface is rough then that can’t be used so just good power washing and then spray to apply and light microfiber to avoid puddling when sprayed down and get it even.

It's hard to gauge texture in a picture, but I would call this rough. It's very uncomfortable to kneel on and doesn't feel great barefoot.

I also need to clean out and seal up control cuts. What would you do for that?

This being a very irregular surface will require 20-40% more material depending on porosity and how well it is sealed by the prior sealer.

Power wash it then apply the Ballisitx with the supplied sprayer in a nice even pattern with no puddling. This surface can’t be easily mopped so spraying is the only method. We would recommend keeping a thick 3/4” nap roller on hand with frame and handle in case you need it since the nap will get I to the low spots.

Clean out and reseal the joints after you have sealed. Any standard joint filler could work. We sell a gray flexible joint sealer or there are other colors commercially available (Metzger and McGuire makes excellent fillers in over 100 colors).

An exposed aggregate is best served with a topical sealer, as it has been.
It helps to "lock" the stones in.

Add a non-skid to the sealer the next time you apply.
