Gyros Drill bits or other quality bits...

So i got in to light aluminum machining some Bmw Bellhousings and have had great results with Gyros bits but started wondering how good they really are and if there is better for such price range.

My application is limited to Aluminum drilling, but wobble is of utmost importance. My drill press is pretty tight from what i can tell and so is the chuck.(by the way big thumbs up to WEN's 12" press)

Size i use are pretty odd ball 18.5mm and 41/64's so its not the kind i can just walk in and get.

Needless to say amazon Chinese 18.5 wobbled horribly, will probably return. But it was 10$ lol

Ened up returning this Gyros drill bit as it chipped when i hit a metal pin pressed in to aluminum, my fault should have been more careful. So now i'm contemplating ordering same replacement or trying a different brand, but so new drill bit market have no brand info....

Black oxide is a coating for wear resistance in steel, use titanium oxide coating for wear resistance in aluminum, doesn't him up as bad.

Oxide is cheaper and suppose to cut all the same when it comes to soft metals, so it i got.






No drill bit recommendations at all?

Unsure on your budget, but these will last you a long time.(I know it's probably overkill for aluminum but if you needed to drill something harder you would be able to.)

Duh, that's over 1/2 so not included in norseman sets. Let me find you something. xD

Then your going to want a screw machine length bit, or a reamer.

+1 on Norseman bits, they're great. Dunno if you can get screw machine length drills from them.

Other good brands are Chicago-Latrobe, Nachi, Guhring, Cleveland, and Precision Twist/Dormer.

Er, no. Black oxide helps hold cutting oil, but provides no wear resistance. Titanium oxide is a white powder used in paint. The gold-colored coatings are titanium nitride (TiN) or titanium aluminum nitride (TiAlN). They allow for higher cutting speeds in steel, but aren't compatible with aluminum—you get chip welding and a built-up cutting edge, especially with TiAlN.

Titanium carbonitride (TiCN) is compatible with aluminum, but I've only seen it as a coating on end mills. It's a dark gray color.

Hm, Norseman only has TiCN on up to 1/2", not on S&D drills.

And that folks is what allows the cheap bits in the hardware store to use the word Titanium in the description. It is used to color the bits but provides nothing in terms of increased usefulness. It is marketing at it's best.

If your in a manufacturing environment putting thousands of holes in the same material day in and day out then coatings designed for that process can pay off.

Aluminum galls when you drill it.

Galling us the transfer of the material you are maching to the surface if the tool being used. Galling increases heath build up and friction, reduces surfaces quality, and should generally be avoided when machining.

Black oxide coating on tooling tends to increase the problem of galling when drilling alluminum. For better results use a bright finished drill bit, and fir best results use and industrial quality titanium nitrate, or other vdp coated type bit specified for aluminum.

Kerosene is usually spec'd as a lubricant for machining aluminum, although there are also specialty lubricants as well.

Major drill bit manufacturers tend to list exactly what the best drill bit materials and coatings are for machining different materials. Even if you don't buy that manufacturers bit, the catalogues can lend advice for what type of bit to look for.

The above won't really matter much if you're only drilling a few holes and you din't need absolute precision or surface finish, but it's usefull for larger jobs.
