Looking for some home-made ideas of how to hang tools, etc from the ceiling of my garage to maximize space.

Not home made, but I found a cheap metal rack to hold shovels, brooms, hoes, and such at the local farm store. I think Home Depot has them too. It was under $15.00. Just a metal strip with double hooks every 8 or 10 inches. Works out real well.

My neighbor hung his 30 gall C.H compresser from his celling it works really well and is up and out of the way. He has the air piped down with copper and then he has a 3-way splitter at the end with quick connects on it. next time I am over there I will try and get pics for you guy's

Exposed rafters/joists? Then, U brackets (wood, metal, depends on weight and object type). You bring down a leg at corners, then have a brace running across to the other leg. Depending on size, you could put plywood up and slide, her stuff (you know, "honey, you need to put the Christmas tree in the garage") up there. Or off season, or rarely used (how many and types of shovels do YOU have, LOL/ kinda a joke with me). How low are the ceilings? If too low for a u, the just add the cross brace and use the space between the rafters as channels.
Do a search for Loft storage for images (don't want a tos violation, posting others pics). I have also seen those bicycle/wheelbarrow rope hoist things, for bigger items.

Only trick is, if you do these ABOVE the garage door, MAKE SURE THE GARAGE DOOR OPENER is DISABLED, when your up the ladder getting something.

I've seen metal "T"s that sound like what you're looking for. They mount upside down; the long upright hangs from a joist, with the cross piece being parrallel to the floor. They have little upstanding flanges at the ends of the cross piece, to keep things from falling off. Use in pairs.

I've also seen pics in magazines of people using large cardboard tubes or PVC tubing, screwed across the joists. You then slip the lumber bits or rake handles into them.

Bungee cords on nails also work.

Depending on your lighting, hanging things from the ceiling can cut way down on your light.

Here is how i made a hanging shelf,
a couple of pieces of angle iron and some threaded rods with a few nuts on the ends.
