Well it all depends on use and your electric.

It would cost me close to $8/hr to run that with electric at $0.19 KW/hr

I was in the same boat just last year. I decided to go with propane. The electric heat would work well for a smaller area due to cost to run it. I have a 20x22' garage. I hear they maintain heat well but they have trouble bringing up the temp from zero degrees.

you know 76 cents an hour doesn't sound bad, until you multiply it by 24 and then again by 30... eek! Even at 50% run time it's $250

maybe I should look at other options lol

as just looking at the hot dawg heaters... I see why they are well liked.

30,000 BTUs multiplied by 57 cents for a therm and then again by 8 and 24 comes out to $160 a month, $80 if it's running 50% of the time to maintain the temp. The $500 up front ***** though, then again it pays for itself in a couple months if you maintain the heat 24/7.

not sure propane would work out...

decisions decisions...

Yeah no joke! I heat my house and garage with the same boiler and it's $300-400 a month for gas in the winter. I couldn't even imagine if I heated with electric!

My friend has the same hotdawg that I do. The 45k running on propane. He has a 20x24' garage. He uses a 100# tank. He keeps the temp at 50 degrees all winter and bumps it up to 70 when hes out there which is about four times a week for a few hours each time. He went through exactly two 100# tanks from october to april. I just had my tank (leaking tank) filled for $60. So for less than $150 he heated his garage all winter. And its colder here than most places in the U.S. Can you do that with electric?

I filled up a couple of propane tanks for the BBQ grill this summer and it was $60
Is propane really that much more expensive here or am I just going to the wrong place?

Where are you guys getting your propane?

I could fill up a tank mid way through the cold season, and heating the whole cold season for 150 or even 200 would be easy to afford.

Do you guys keep your propane tanks outside behind the garage or inside?

The price seems pretty consistent around here. U-haul,amerigas,harbor city oil and curtis oil were all within a few dollars of each other.

On calculators, the electric cost almost always beats propane. In real life, I have never found it to work that way. I'm going to try both this winter.

Getting back to the OP's question - yes I have used one of these for about 5 yrs. now. The price of them locally though is about $70 CDN. I just use it to keep a small room in my shop (where the water lines come in) from freezing so it doesn't run all the time. Seems to work fine but I don't know about power consumption.

The biggest hassle was buying the special receptacle it takes - it is about half the cost of the heater!!
