Heat Pump

I have purchased a mini split air-to-air Heat Pump for my home. It is not as yet installed. My question is: I would like to place the external unit in the garage which is attached to the residence. This will have some advantages: no rust, greater heat source, pritect rom wind and snow, more accessible etc.

Can anyone tell me if this is something I should consider doing or should avoid, and why.

Not a good idea.

You'll be dumping a ton of heat into the garage during the summer months and the condenser won't be able to dissipate it effectively. During the rest of the year, you'll be cooling down the garage to the point it may be colder than outside the house.

You need lots of airflow over the condenser.

I am not an expert, but some on here are.

My first reaction is that the condesor needs to have air circulation, air moving around it, not in a still garage.

My other concern would be the noise it would create in the garage.

The other is the space it would take up. You must leave space around it again for circulation and for servicing.

I am always looking for things to move out of my garage, seldom for things to put in, unless it is another rapidly depreciating asset such as a car or motorcycle!

Don't do it. I considered doing something similar for a mini-split I was installing to cool a small room that I built inside my 50x75 barn, which is also 20 feet to the roof. After thoroughly researching it I concluded it was best to put the outdoor unit outside. If it's not a good idea in my barn, it's a worse idea for your garage.
