Tl:dr-use heavy aluminum tape as flashing for deck joists?
I’m replacing a deck in my back yard. I thought I did a competent job on the old one but 30 years has come and gone.
I’ve been waiting for lumber prices to become more rational after Covid. I guess they’re as good as they’re going to get. I’ve got 2 x 8 pressure treated joists. I went ahead and gave them an additional treatment with copper coat (Copper naphthenate). And I’ve put some exterior latex on the top and ends.
As you might be able to guess, I’d rather these things not rot out again. Fortunately(?), I don’t think I have 30 years left.
I was thinking of rolling out some aluminum flashing along the top of the joists before I install the deck boards. Cutting aluminum flashing into thin strips is going be a kind of a pain in the ***. Then I thought why not heavy duty aluminum tape?
I realize the pressure treatment from the deck boards is probably going to mess with the aluminum. But that will take time. And the adhesive might trap moisture?
Anyway, I thought I’d throw it out there for comments. A little overkill doesn’t bother me. But I don’t want to do something dumb. Any thoughts appreciated.
Thanks
