Hello,

I'm from Red Lake, Ontario and its getting down near -40 celsius tonight...

I am planning to a build a 24' x 30' garage.

I had hoped to get a concrete pad poured professionally but the cost quoted was nearly my entire budget (20K for labour/materials for the pad). So I am planning to do it myself to save 10k++, with the help of some knowledgable people. I plan on building the rest myself as well.

Unfortunately I live in a somewhat remote and small community so the options for contractors is limited. And sadly the garage may cost more than the funds i have available but I am still planning to design it for when it does happen, which I still hope will be this summer.

STEVE: i'll try to blow some heat your way, but it's pretty cold here in the PNW lately too. so what does pictures of the MIDDLE OF NOWHERE LOOK LIKE? care to post up a few?

some of the guys are cutting costs by building pole buildings. pouring a big cement slab takes skills and even though i've poured, mixed and formed a lot of cement i'd probably spend my money hiring one of those pros you know or trading services if you have something of value to trade.

Welcome. I would be most concerned with prepping site for the pad. The pour is easy enough and a stoned monkey can assemble a garage.
I know your area well,, hauled powder into Campbell Mine and Dickinson for 10 years,,even ended up getting Campbell retired surface truck...a B42 Mack

Here are a few examples from the summer, fall and winter! Pretty much just a small town surrounded by trees and lakes!

I will have to look more into pole buildings, but yeah if I hired out a contractor it would basically double the cost.. I should be able to get some helpers with experience pouring and finishing concrete we will see... I'd basically have to cut the size of my garage in half if I wanted to hire a contractor, which would be pointless.

Oh thats cool! My house does have a level sandy gravel mix that was put in for the house foundation, and there is enough that the contractor said they would not need to bring in any additional gravel/sand etc. But its still a bigger job than I would like to take on..
