Help identifying old Kellogg Compressor and other questions

Hi guys. I picked up this Kellogg air compressor and it has 52tv stamped on the cylinder. Any idea of the model and specs? No luck finding that model number with a google search. Also, the motor is a 1hp GE and on the plate states it can be run off 110 or 220v. Question is if I rewire for 110v, what am I looking at for CFM at 90psi. Want to use this to paint so need 9cfm minimum but not sure if this will push that on 110v. Thanks for the help.

110 or 220 won't change the CFM, just the amps drawn by the motor. Seems unlikely a 1 HP single stage single cyl. compressor will make 9CFM. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. The thing is, the electric motor is 1hp. I am still not sure how many hp the compressor itself is rated at but it appears to have two cylinders. From a search, i am thinking it is a 352tv cylinder which is rated at 7.5hp i believe. Here is an attached pic of what i found online.

That compressor was made no later than 1943 based on the company name, and is pretty small. A 352 is much larger.

A great looking machine and love that huge motor and color. I too thought it was a single cylinder but in one photo it looks like a parallel two stage. Please post a photo from the top of the head of the pump. I agree that you can’t get nine cfm from one horsepower. Try using that newfangled hvlp painting? Don’t know if that would help.

Should i swap the motor out for a higher hp one or maybe switch it to a gas engine? I have a 8hp briggs sitting around. Thanks.

It’s not about adding horsepower, that electric motor looks like it was original to the assembly and is WAY more powerful than a modern one h.p. Motor. It should be all that setup needs. Rewiring it for 110 will not affect the speed or output, will only double the amp draw, as stated by others. From the pictures of the top of the pump it Is two cylinders and single stage...maybe that is why the exhaust pipe is so big coming out of the head-so it may surprise us at its output! Run it and find out...ps-make sure the oul pump is making pressure, that has pressure feed to both front and rear bearings if my old eyes and tiny screen don’t deceive me...very cool! How much was it?

I have never run into any information on this model when doing research on Kellogg American, or American Brake Shoe. It certainly appears to be a twin, but looking at the head I would say it is single stage with 2 parallel cylinders. Can you estimate the bore and/or stroke? If it runs, you could simply test it to get some idea of capacity. A single stage should make 90 psi, but it might be short on flow for your needs. That breather tube is massive. Can you tell if the pistons alternate, or maybe move together (which might explain the big breather)?

Tha motor tag should clean up nicely, was out in the garage and didn’t see that it says Repulsion Induction until now...there is a lot to read and learn about this type of motor on this forum and others. Very strong startup torque, (and lots of sparks!). These motors use brushes to start and then the brushes retract mechanically to change over to running without brushes shes. I’m trying to sort out a problem with one of those now. You should clean and inspect that motor and free-up the mechanism before running it unless it’s in good condition now...or just send it to me....hahaha! Lovely machine!

It is not obvious to me that the EM52 (which shows up in a few places) and this 52TV are really the same model. They are 20 years apart and don't really look the same.

I agree, was hoping perhaps it was an older version of it. Hopefully he can compare those specs with what he has. Bottom line is that its about a 4 CFM machine and he is looking for 9... Still a cool piece of Kelogg vintage iron.

I had a similar compressor but from the 50's and i'll tell you that you wont get very far with painting. It does not put out that much air, even if you swapped pulleys to spin the compressor faster. Another thing to consider is that the tank probably has a lot of thin areas from rust. When i cut my tank open the metal on the bottom was half eaten in some areas so there was only less than 1/8" thick metal, possibly less. It's a cool compressor but dont expect miracles from it. That's why i got a new 5hp 60 gallon so i could actually use a compressor instead of fighting it.

That's a great resource, but it does not seem to cover this model. There are also some typos down in the table, so if you use it, make sure the numbers make sense.

Hi all, new to site. From CT. I have a Kellogg Bearcat with a rivited tank . Would anyone have any idea as to how old this is? SR# D 17735.
