so i have been starting to build up my tool collection & funny thing as i look up different questions on google, this forum seems to be in the top 5 everytime! hence, i had to join!

my pop is in full blown alzheimers so ive been helping clean my parents house. i started cleaning & arranging tools first - i.e. junk pile, keep pile. some of those tools i remember as a kid...& as kids we pretty much destroyed anything & everything so its painful & also nice when i find an old tool with white paint from when me & my brother did something dumb. but there it is. my pops old tool i remember him using when he was 'all there' & then the addition of us kiddos using it for whatever.

also another personal story is amongst those tools as a kid i remember finding some tools with similar initials to my older brother. when i asked my parents - hey this isnt roberts' (my brother) wire gauge....thats when i found out i had an uncle younger than my dad who moved to milwaukee & mysteriously disappeared...**** into thin air. my gramps went out there to search & help to no avail. my dad is the one who got the tools from my previously unknown uncle & thats the reason they named my older brother his same name.

anyways...tools. i got a huge box for the goodwill. i swear modern tools are the worst quality! i realized that after cleaning. there were 5 hammers & i dipped them all in a vinegar bath overnight. surprise surprise, the 2 old timer hammers from the 50's came out stronger than ever. the 3 crappy hammers from the last 20 years (i **** you not) pretty much disolved away. one of the hammers got eaten about %25 which is stunning! even the protective plastic coating was there & the steal had eroded in ONE night! sigh anyways...glad to be here! hope to learn a lot from you folks! cheers

Welcome. Sorry about your dad's alzhemer's. My mom also has it and is starting to forget us. It's super sad.

Please post some pics. We love pics of tools around here. :)

Welcome to the forum from the shore of both San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean. Sorry to learn of your fathers condition.

Old tools were built to a Quality; much of the newer stuff is being built to a price.
