Hi all,
I have been following this board for a few years since a fellow pure stock racer (BB767) posted about his 1930's auto shop. Well, I finally have a garage to be able to work on and some day have it look like an old service station.
The garage is about 50x30 and has a partial loft/2nd floor. Since buying the property in Nov of last year, I have done a few structural and roof fixes. The roof is tin and had leaks all over due to a lot of the existing screw nails backing out and the horrible job of installing a window box by the last owner. I also had to put a screw post in to hold up a section of the loft and stair support before I put anything in the loft. At some point in its life, the North half had several rooms, possibly office space, that acted as support for the loft. Well, I don't know when it happened, but all that support except for a center grouping of 2x4s is gone now. Someone even took out all support under the stairs. The owner before us used it as an automotive repair shop so he cut out an area of the 2nd floor to have a lift installed. It was already gone when we first looked at the house.
I believe it started out as a horse barn complete with dirt floors and a full 2nd floor. The owner before us had the concrete floor poured and installed the radiant heat piping so I just have to get the boiler or whatever I choose to use. I have been working on it as much as I can when we aren't working on house projects. I am in the process of framing a wall to cover the opening where the back door is. It is a sliding door like the front but it is nailed shut, in sorry shape, and the stairs are in front of it. I want to make the 2nd floor more stable so I have to figure out how to better shore it up. The 2nd floor windows are borded up so I want to install windows so I can get some cross-breeze up there. I also have to replace a bunch of the 2x4 wall supports that horses must have worn away with their teeth or hooves. I also want to put some sort of siding on it and also insulate the walls and put up drywall. But, I have to figure out why the floor area under the open part of the garage often gets a lot of moisture on it. Any ideas?
I want to install cabinets or shelving to better organize all the car parts and other stuff I currently have in there.
Next year, I plan on doing something about the garage door. I will either mess with the current door or install an overhead one and widen the opening. It is barely wide enough to get my car in.
An interesting factoid was told to us from a neighbor that in the late 70's or early 80's the garage was used as a chop shop. The owner was caught and got some jail time also.
