hello everyone,


i came here like most of you guys to look into building a bad *** garage. i need to learn as much as i can about the process. i would like to research metal vs. wood vs. block garages and try to get a better understanding on what would be best for me and my location. plus my $$$


i have a bunch of tools and need a place for my toys and projects. i have too much stuff with too little space.


what would you guys consider for a garage in the upstate ny area? 30x40 with enough height to lift a truck with a double post bend a pak.

i like the raised wall concrete foundation so water would have a harder time getting in. but not as much as a house something like 2 or 3ft.

if you guys have any good info on metal garage kits or know of something good for around 25k turn key. could lean a bit both ways. let me know

i have a foundation guy and a bunch of helpers. also what height would i need? 15ft? or 20ft?

Welcome to the forum. What part of upstate are you from? I am in Delaware County (Delhi area). Have a daughter in Rochester and another in Dryden.

My garage is on slab so probably not much help with your block question. I would say that pole construction will probably give you the best bang for the buck though. And contrary to what some say........they can be finished on the inside efficiently.

Scissor trusses may be away to get the height you need for a lift without going as high as 15-20 feet on the whole thing.

I'm from the Albany area and built a 32'x36' with a 12' ceiling height. I installed a BendPak XPR10a and I had to cut a chase out of the ceiling to raise the posts; it is literally 1/4" too short. I poured four foot high foundation walls and insulated both sides with the blue Dow foam board. The floor is approx 6" thick and is reinforced with rebar. Framing is 2x6 with R21 in the walls and I'm pretty sure I've got R48 in the ceiling. I also bought a garage door with the highest insulating factor I could find. For heat, I installed a Mr Heater Big Maxx 75K BTU unit heater.

My biggest piece of advice is if you think it's not going to be big enough, it won't. I wish mine was 36'x42'.
