i have a 1969 mustang w/302, in the instrument cluster there is a wire that is purplish blue that goes to the voltage limitor and also joins with 3 other wires one to the wiper switch and the ignition switch and to the fuse box the puplish wire gets hot and the gauges don't work any ideas?

I'd suggest you get a wiring diagram for your car and see what that wire's intended function is. This way you can fix it instead of guessing what is wrong.

Sorry, but it's a shot in the dark to say what may be wrong. The voltage limiter may be bad and high voltage may have damaged the instrument cluster. Have you done a voltage check on that wire? What voltage is the voltage limiter suppose to maintain?

Agree with the wiring diagram. But that said gauges do run on reduced voltage, usually around 8 volts. Now does the car have a bolt meter or amp gauge? Amp gauge will have a shunt that will be calibrated to provide the millivolt drop across 2 points. Gauge will connect there. Just something to think about. Get the schematics and stop guessing.

Replace the voltage limiter as that supplies power to the gages.
