No, you just hit it with the hammer, the hammer hitting it will turn it a tiny bit. Usually theres no reason to change direction, you don't want to use it to tighten things, the one I had (non snappy) changed direction by turning the handle.

I got one non snappy, just hit it with the hammer. I dont think you would need it to tighten things up.

You turn it in the direction you want (clockwise = on, counterclockwise = off), then you smack it. Just smacking it won't do anything. It's ramped or sloped such that when you smack it, it turns the anvil a tiny bit. If you don't turn it, you'll just be smacking a spring.

Agree. You need to trun it so its set to turn the direction you desire to move the object (clockwise or counterclockwise). Once you have it set, you shuold hold it in your hand and apply a moderate amount of turning pressure with your hand such that when you hit it with the hammer the impact and the turning pressure work together to rotate the object.

The best way to describe it that I can think of is you need to preload the impact driver (by way of applying a twisting pressure with your arm) and then upon hitting it the combined forces work together to get the job done.

I bought the $5 version at HF, and can't figure out anything about it. Things turn with seemingly no effect, and I haven't been able to really test it on anything. Its at the top of my annoying tool list.

Very easy tool to use, the cheap usually work as well as their more costly counterparts in my experience.
