Seems no matter where I put my welding
magnets they always get chips or grinding
dust on them, then when I go to use them
again I have a major chore on my hands.
What do you do ?

Subbed for the answer.

I have no idea. Its a conundrum. I only buy switchable magnets for this exact reason. They are spendy, so I am curious.

Bench mount wire wheel.
Also I've read to put them in plastic bags while using and storing, then pull the bag and particles off at the same time. Haven't tried that as yet.

This is what I do. Use heavy duty ziplocks. If your magnets are strong youll wreck them fairly regularly so keep a supply. When you remove the bag the filings fall off and then just put it back on if its still in good shape.

I never tried it on my welding magnets since I've never had a problem with shavings, but I did the ziploc bag trick with my 9in torpedo level all the time for electrical work and around the drill press, and it works great.

Try a more powerful magnet with an old sock around it. Pull the shavings of the smaller magnet with the larger magnet and then turn the sock inside out and toss it in the trash.
