I'd've guessed that the R model originally had the Rotating base - maybe the R's base has been lost to time? Just a gamble though...

That's a good thought, dayid, but here's what I've observed:

The 105R I saw has a front lip/flange that hangs over the bench edge to make it stationary.

I have a Reed 204-1/2 that has a swivel base. My understanding is that the 200 level Reed vises are the ones with swivel bases.

Looks like you may be onto something about the fixed base vs the fixed/cornered base

The first R vs non-R vises I found were a 106 and a 106R:
