How to do a stripe in epoxy?

Using a 100% solids gray color epoxy for the base color. Would like to do a stripe in the floor in black. I am thinking I will use devran 224hs for the stripe. This is solvent based versus the 100% solids. Any issue doing this? Thinking the solvent based will be easier to roll using a pan.

you could do it two ways...

1. do the entire floor with your "background" color allow to dry. Tape off the stripe area and apply a new coat. when it is all dry do the clear.
2. Tape off the stripe area and paint and allow to dry. Tape off stripe area and then apply background color. When dry do clear.

In option 2 you should have no noticeable "hump" between colors where with option 1 you would. Not sure which one would be more difficult, but think option 2 would give you a better product

Anyone else can chime and and let us know of alternative solutions

#2 works best. It's done all the time and the "hump" isn't that noticeable.

Trying to paint the line on unsealed chips would cause massive bleeding. Seal the chips, then tape off, then use a formica roller, it'll flatten your tape tight. Dont go thick, roll tight. Wait till it tacks up and roll on tight again. Once well covered, wait till it tacks up, then pull tape. You should have a crisp line.

Here is a sample of painted;

With chips, same thing, tape off, formica roll it, roll on clear epoxy, sprinkle chips, then once tacked up, pull tape. In this option I have found that the 1/8 and 1/16 inch chips work and look better than larger chips. Larger chips usually leave a jagged line or not as crisp as small chips.

My thinking was that do the whole floor in the base gray (no chips on anything). Then tape the stripe off. Roll twice (black color over light gray). Then pull up the tape. Next apply a urethane.

So with this process we are looking at a possible "hump" between the colors? Do think the urethane would make it flat enough? Is there an issue using solvent based epoxy on 100% epoxy for the stripe?

Garage guy what are you using for the stripe? same material as the base?

Didn't realize there were flakes involved, but if there are, Garageguy's right about them needing to be sealed first. Depending on the look you're going for, another way to differentiate areas is to use a heavier broadcast of flakes and or flake colors from one area to another.

No flakes invloved. Yes, my original floor has a heavy flake but it is sealed with a think yellow clear coat. lol

All good suggestions, and I think making sure the tape is down well is KEY! Good
luck and please post pics! you could always run the tape down, skip the black, topcoat, pull the tape and have a purdy yellllaaa line! Just kidding!!!!
