How to get Sherwin Williams Armour Seal epoxy

I called a Sherwin-Williams store today to see if they had the Armour Seal 1000. They said that's been discontinued and replaced with Armour Seal 650. He didn't sound sure of the differences, but anyway, he said I need a contractor's license to get it. Any way around this besides getting a contractor to buy it for me?

I'm in CA btw.

They probably say that because they dont want so called contractor grade in the home....AKA they dont want you to have it because if you do they cant screw you over and come back down the road to again by the less quality stuff again

I think I remember hearing that certain types of epoxy are not allowed to be sold in California, contractor license or not. Try calling an out of state store and see what they say.

I could have sworn someone from Cali was talking about driving to Nevada the other day to get the better grade epoxy...

Well, there's two issues here: 1) the armorseal 1000 being discontinued--is that just here in CA? and 2) either or both being available only to contractors only.

I had a contractor neighbor in our previous home (now rental) who would probably help me out. Just thought I'd try eliminating the middle man.

Just called my Sherwin store in Virginia, and as of Jan 1, 2005, ArmorSeal 1000HS is no longer available due to the VOC's in it. She was willing to sell me some that she had in stock prior to Jan 1, but it had sand mixed in it. She didn't know about a replacement for it yet.
So, according to her, nobody can get it, not even contractors.

650 is self leveling. Unless your floor is *perfectly* flat...forget it. You'll be using a boat load to get it looking nice or sanding the floor till the end of time.

This is a total shame. 650 looks very lame compared to the 1000 epoxy. WTF.

Abrasion resistance:

650: 100 mg loss
1000: 64.8 mg loss

I just did my floor with another product but my friend just went to the Sherwin-Williams store and bought Armor-Seal for his shop...no problem!

I did my floor in Sherwin Williams Armorseal 1000. Didn't have any trouble buying it.

Worked pretty good.

I walked into a SW store yesterday and he showed me the flyer of the AS1000HS. Didnt have it in stock but would call around for me. He found some at another store here in Toronto.

I'm waiting for him to call back with price and I need to get dimensions of garage before I buy.

Ijust bought some SW Macropoxy 646. It's marine industrial product, low VOC. Just finished most of the floor tonight. Will definitely need two coats, but 2 gallons mixed covered about 500 sq ft singlecoat for $90. Was going to do checkered floor, but white looks real good and is screaming for graphics. Bought it from the Chico, Ca store.

Sweet, a Californian. I'll have to check out the Macropoxy. Curious, did you just buy it from a regular SW retail store? Cause on their web site it shows retail and commercial stores as separate.

I was looking for that quality for this section of the floor.I put the white down and it definitely needs two coats. Two kits =four gallons did 24 x26 area. About $95 per kit. I like the white and may not do the checkered.

You might try a foam roller for a smoother finish...

I work at Sherwin Williams and we would never sell armor seal to retail customers. Not because we couldn't, but a lot of people do not use it correctly and then would come back to us wanting there floors sandblasted. Our district manager didn't want us selling or recommending any garage floor system because of the liabilities.

It was always a combination of things. Some out of there control. Moisture in the concrete, not waiting the correct time in between coats, applying too thick, etc.. I am not an expert on this stuff by all means. I mostly sold wall paint to contractors and retail customers. We just didn't want to have someone come back and say our product was defective and have to pay to fix their garage.

Look at the performance tips on the last page. That recoat time is huge. Many people just recoat it when they think its dry, or they don't do it within that 72 hr window. That will cause it to fail.

Another reason stores don't want to sell it is because we have to usually order it and it only comes in 4 gallon cases. So if you only want 2 part A and 2 part B we are still stuck with 2 of each that might sit there forever. Try going downtown to your commercial stores where they keep it in stock and you won't have a problem.

Found out that I can still get the 1000HS in the county just south of mine. Apparently, the county I live in is the south-most county that has been banned on the east coast. That's good news since I'm looking to buy a new house and will need to paint the garage floor.

I finally found a way to get this stuff. Turns out a friend of a friend can get it since he's a painter. For some, including me, this might be the only way to get this stuff...

I had no problem at all getting it.......and true to form for what was listed above, they come 4 gallons to a case and when I was done with my floor I had 3 gallons of each left over which is just 1 gallon each short of a case. However, the sherwin williams I dealt with had no problem at all with my returning the six gallons for a refund of 318.00........
Good to deal with. The only thing I would add is that they recommended that on my first coat I reduce the mix 50 percent. Looking back I'd have preferred to have reduced it more like 25 percent but in the end the floors turned out nice after two coats. The pictures of my new shop floor and my garage floor is in gallery section under "detached garage pictures 5" or something like that......... Keith

I called the local SW store, and stopped by and picked it up, no problem. This was last summer (after the ban date)

VOC regulations changed with 01/01/2006 for a number of things in the Northeast. The "contractors only" can be because supposedly the contractors will pay attention to a MSDS whereas a homeowner may not use proper respirators and that sort of thing. Actually, I find that individuals tend to be more likely to follow the warnings - mainly because they read them since they "aren't in the business" - whereas contractors blaze ahead on things because they don't have time to spend on such things.

And understand that rules take effect after dates that they are proposed. Like the IBC 2006 goes into effect 01/01/2007 in areas where it is adopted.

just ordered armorseal 1000hs in MD . the only thing is banned is the clear coat , which is useful in chipping the color.
