Brand new to the forum. Lots of great info on here. I'm sure this has been asked previously but I just dont have the time to mull through all of the posts and threads to find the answer I'm needing. So I figured I'd ask all of you pros what I should do.
Last March I bought a house in Southern Ontario, Canada. The house has an attached garage which is partially finished. The walls that are shared with the interior of the house are drywalled and insulated with batting and vapour barriered on the house side.
Like a lot of other guys on here I'm trying to insulate my garage not only to retain heat inside but hopefully to help retain heat in the bedroom above.
Some of the walls that lie on the exterior are exposed except for a 20 foot portion, which is drywalled only (no insualtion). I've just finished running wire within this wall and intend to insulate it. I want to use spray foam on the exposed portion but was told that I would only need cellulose for the portions that are still covered with drywall. I know the spray foam acts a vapour barrier so i'm not to concerned with that portion but the cellulose and the other walls currently insualted have me concerned. Do I need vapour barrier in the walls with cellulose? What about the walls that already have insulation in them? Should they be vapour barriered on both sides?
I dont intend to heat this garage year round but rather when I'm in it working (mini wood working shop) only.
I dont want to comprimise the walls/insulation by not adding vapour barrier. But pulling all of the drywall down is a big job and I dont want to go to that extreme if it does warrant the amount of use.
I should mention I'm only using a 1500W heater in there too. It's a 1 1/2 car garage.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
