One of my friends called me saying their parents in the gas fitting buisness was given a gas fired heater from a grocery store like a safeway or supervalue. He also told me it could be converted to propane very easy. I havent seen it yet, but the size is 3x2x2 . I know its pretty large, but free is free. My shop is 28x30 with 10'6" ceilings fully insulated. Will it burn me down or what do you guys think....? Rock on!!!!!! Lee

What is (are) the BTU rating of the heater? Does it hang from the ceiling? Pictures? Also it may have the propane conversion inside of the real or bottom panel on it! Read all the stickers and look all spec's up ont it before continuing.

ABout the same size as a house furnace, a lot of people in my area running old house furnaces. As long as you don't mind the floor space it uses you'll be fine.

Hook it up, you'll be amazed how quick a unit like that can bring you up to room temp. Just set it up to a thermostat . You'll love it. I guess you cannot keep it NG?

So, i picked them up today...I ended up 2 of them for $100 .( thought i could sell one for a few hundred and make a few bucks!) They are a olsen KAS-200 160,000 BTU output. They weigh about 200lbs.... Im almost afraid to have one hanging in the air .....I wonder if i could mount a safety shelf under it, in the corner where it will be...Is this even worth using? .Or should i sell them both?

On a planet with alot of really Stupid people
Holy Mackeral, What a beast.
I would look into the heater further, makes sure it works on or is adaptable to your fuel source, that it is in safe operable condition. If it were me and it all looked good, I'd use it.
It is way overkill for your shop but it should heat your space up quick.
You could even get double duty out of it by keeping your garage doors open and melt the snow from your driveway.

You should be able to work outside with the door open and still not need a jacket with that beast cranked up.

:lol_hitti So, what is the answer here? With such a big heater, would i be wasting alot of propane just firing it up over a smaller one? OR is the bigger going to be more efficient...I do have room in the corner for it above my compressor.....So, whats the vote? Keep it or sell it and get a smaller one?

Thats a lot of metal for 160k BTU. The one pictured here in the garage is a 350,000 BTU Dayton heater. Its pretty damn big, but im not sure its 200 lb. The garage is 50x100 and there is another one of the big daytons in the other corner and a third smaller 150k in a different section of the garage.
If you have the gas supply to make them work and can safely support the weight, go for it. You already have 100 bucks in the heater, the LP conversion cost, (not sure would guess close to another 100??), rigging material cost, time, etc....A new heater may not be as expensive as you think. Especially if you price the 2 that you have to sell and pay for most if not all of a new heater.

I seem to keep running into 3 phase compressors that are way too huge to manage. They are a good price, under a 100 bucks. It has a 10 hp 3 phase. Plan on either a new 1 phase motor or a huge phase converter for a a 23 y.o. compressor that wasnt one of Quincys shining moments(according to Quincy). Its a toss up. If you have to put a bunch of money into it, it may just not be worth it.

Now you thinkin Leeboy......here is my assessment.

1) Your 840 sq.ft shop only needs about 60,000 BTUs to heat it.

2) The free heater uses 200,000 BTUs to create 160,000 BTUs. That's an 80% energy efficiency.

3) As an example; the Modine Hot Dawg HD75 uses 75,000 BTUs and puts out 60,000 BTUs. That's an 80% energy efficiency rating also.

Now, that's BRAND NEW specs, therefore you can bet money on it, the free unit has lost some of it's efficiency. Yes, they have the same new efficiency "FUEL" rating, but what about the ELECTRICAL efficiency rating. The bigger unit will cost more in electricity.

Now it's simple math.

In BTU's, it should cost the same in fuel as both units are 80% energy efficient on the fuel and both will require 60,000 BTUs to heat 840 sq.ft. The free heater will heat it faster(bigger blowers ??), however it will also use more electricity to turn the blowers than the HD75.

THe HD75 has a 1/12 H.P. blower while the free unit has TWO ???? H.P. blowers. I couldn't find the specs, but from the looks, they are larger than 1/12 H.P.

So, it's more than likely going to cost more to "run" over shorter periods than the properly sized unit will cost to run a few minutes longer.

Just my 2 cents as a Building Official as I see the sizing spec's on buildings all the time. Sell the two 160BTU units, size and buy your heater according to your building as overkill costs money in the long run.

You already have them. If they work like they are supposed to. I would run it till you kill it.

The money that you saved from buying a new one can be used to buy stuff for the shop. Like maybe another piece of equipment.

Bought this propane 200k btu unit on craigslist for $80. A 30 lb tank, filled, cost me $55. Cranked it up on high yesterday, outside temp was 25--had our first cold snap in Chicago yesterday--inside garage was 38. It took exactly 15 min to bring temp to 58 deg. Turned it down to 1/4 open and maintained temp fine. My garage has only two insulated walls with open rafters to the roof and roof vents, but I'm putting up plastic on the bottom of the rafters this weekend and the follow up with OSB over that in a couple weeks. That will be a huge improvement too. I'll also be on the lookout for a 100 lb tank and then use the 30 lb tank as a reserve.

The other benefit is that there's no electricity used at all with these units. I'm still considering running a gas line to the garage and buying a heater that mounts up on the wall, but I'm going to run this for the winter and see how it works out. The nice thing is I can just take it into the house and store it in the basement once spring arrives and not take up any room in the garage.

E30bimmer you will go through a LOT of gas.
I have a 25x40 garage with r19 wall insulation, dry-walled ceiling and walls. The attic has only about an R4 rating and I went through five 125gal tanks last winter. This past summer I switched to a 500 gal tank and am still adding attic insulation. I only heated when I was in there.
