I am going to be working on a payloader cab in a remote location over a few months so I can't bring the Shop Vac I keep in my shop. I don't want to spend that much for that remote location so am looking at a $ 60 Shop Vac #5922805 8 gallon, 4.5hp with a 1 1/4" hose. I already have a really long 1 1/4" hose to use with it. Anything better, cheaper for that remote job?

Might as well buy that one. The Bauer from harbor freight costs about the same with similar (wildly inflated) power stats.
Do you find that the smaller diameter hose gets clogged too easily? That’s the only thing I don’t like about my Fein shop vac that has that same diameter hose.

I have a plastic Shop Vac probably 15 years old. 5Gal. probably sucked up a thousand gallons of water (seemingly) off of the basement floor with it. Enough that I have worn down the nozzles from the rough concrete.

They are all right.

Ridgid is great.

I would consider DeWalt stealth sonic for not as loud if I did not need variable suction (like I use when connected to a sander), but the Ridgid is also not variable suction

I'm looking at this 4 gallon, 6 HP model from Lwoes:
https://www.lowes.com/pd/Shop-Vac-ShopVac-4-Gallon-6-0PHP-Wet-Dry-Vacuum-Cleaner/5015584127

I like that it's small (not too much space eaten up), has the biggest motor I've seen on shop vacs at 6hp, and includes a 25' cord. Anybody seen anything that beats this on those particular criteria?
Looking at the specs on the website show that the motor is 10 amps. Using an on line calculator shows that 10amps at 100% efficiency (not likely) is 1.61 hp. Yes, they always lie about this. I would try to find find the highest amps as you can and disregard hp ratings.

This Rigid is 4 gallons, about the same price, down an amp but comes with a car cleaning kit. The hose that comes with the kit is vastly superior to the one that comes standard.

Check filter costs for whatever you buy. I got some sticker-shock last week for my Rigid.

The large Rigid that goes on sale for black Friday for $40 is my preference. The performance to value is hard to beat
I think I bought the same one at the same time. It’s has done well. I feel like shop vacs are almost disposable so it comes down to price. 3-4 years out of a $40-60 shop vac, it owes me nothing. For industrial/ commercial daily use, I’d definitely want something better, cost more and my expectations would be higher.

I use my second Ridgid Shop Vac to clean the filter on the first one, then vice-versa. I get a couple of years out of filters that way.
A dust separator goes a long way for increasing lifespan of not just filters, but the whole vacuum. Obviously, it’s not always practical, but if it is, do it. Even the one HD sells that fits on a 5 gallon bucket works pretty well.

Good point. They're calculating "Peak Horsepower" based on inrush current at startup or something goofy that doesn't matter. Need to take a second look at several models now that you mention it.

Me being me, I went overboard even with my shop vac, so I got a Stryker vacuum.
Its basically a shop vacuum cleaner, but on steroids, high quality and longevity, with a cost of thousands of dollars and might be seen in a morgue.
I have just the canister part, im figuring out how to 3D print a coupling so it will accept standard vacuum cleaner accessories.

The price is more comparable if you delete the detailing kit. I have the same vac and bought the detailing kit separately on a Black Friday sale for $20.

I hate Shop Vac brand as they are not only LOUD but the frequency of the screach is extremely annoying to my ears.

$30 at Wal-Mart, not going to be a world-beater but should be a decent budget option:

Hart 6 gallon 5 peak HP stainless steel wet/dry vacuum with bonus car cleaning kit

Some comments from people who've previously purchased and/or compared to other vacs.

I have two Rigids that I bought off of FB marketplace in like new condition. I gave $30 for one and $15 for the other.

A 20 count package of bags from Amazon make a huge difference in keeping the filter clean and suction at the high end.
