ic remodel cans clearance to joists?

How close to the ceiling joist can I put ic remodel type cans? So far I haven't seen any specs. They will be used with led lights, but I would like to idiot proof the installation in case someone uses 75 watt floods at a later date.
Reason for asking: spacing layout- stud finder shows a joist very close to the layout.
Rather error on the safe side. Thank You!

How about you just buy the LED cans in the first place. They have some that are only a few inches thick/deep because of the LEDs and the offer a better air seal to the ceiling for reduced dust and conditioned air loss

The cans I have include a rubber gasket to seal against the ceiling.
I picked them because they would allow either screw in bulbs- incandescent
or led. Back to the original question- what is the proper distance away from the joist to properly install them to be safe?

IC means Insulation Contact.....which means it can **** right up against the joist and insulation.

I most likely have the same cans.....I don't think you can get so close that the can actually touches the wood....

But I would suggest LED's or CFL's. A fraction of the energy AND heat.

I'm going to use these: 18w / 1200 lumen / 3000k from costco.
I just wanted the cans properly mounted so that any type of light
could be used safely.
