Look carefully at the back. Often, the manufacturer's name is stamped on the back. It helps to hold a light at a sharp angle.

Nice box. Most of the time, the way to get the drawers out is to open them, then push them back in an inch or so. Find a metal strip (a hacksaw blade works if the slides are wide enough) and slip it between the drawer and the slide. With some wiggling and jiggling, you'll slide the strip in and it'll allow the drawer to run past the stop. You can do one side at a time or get both loose and pull the drawer straight out.

It's easier to do than to explain... the first one is always a pain in the ***.. once you get one, you'll know where the stops are and they'll get easier.

Thanks. The back is pretty rusty as is the bottom. My mom said that she "bought off a truck" in 1962 at an old car dealership.

Local Snap On guy looked at it and turned his nose up. I tried to impress upon him that it used to be my grandpa's and was just looking for any info he might have. He left.

The reason the Snap On guy snubbed you on this is because that isn't much of a quality tool box. I've seen those and it looks like the beginning of the import stuff, say from around the Viet Nan War era. Harbor Freight was just getting started in those days.

But, it's your grandfather's box and that means something. The Snap On guy needs better manners.

Maybe I do, too.

Yeah, I realize that it's "isn't much of a quality tool box" but it was my grandpa's and he kept his WWII bronze star paperwork in it so I'd like to restore it, if possible.

Could be a Union... I have one that looks somewhat similar. You might want to search through the vintage toolboxes thread.. there's tons of pics and you might find a match.

It almost looks like an old Kennedy box. They made automotive boxes besides the standard machinist box with that style of lid system back in the day. In red even. The handles seem a bit odd for Kennedy though.
