Hi Fellas
This is my first post here and I wonder if you guys could help me out? I just got my new garage built it is a 30x40. I just finished the attic floor now I am trying to figure out how many light I'll need. I'm getting older so I need a little more light than I used too. I thought about running four rows of 4ft. two bulb lights with six to a row. I'll have each row on a different switch. I want to be able to get out there at night and work on my 57 Chevy. What do you think? Also I wanted to ask, I was going to put in three 220 volt plug reciptals. Should I run each reciptcal on its own circut or can I run them in searies like 110 reciptcals? As soon as I can figure out how to post pictures I will. I just retired and now I'm going to start enjoying myself out in my new garage.
Thanks guys

For lighting I recommend 125 to 150 lumens per square foot. I've got 125 and sometimes my old eyes could use a little more. Not knowing now you'll be using the 240V outlets I suggest each one to be on their own circuit.

If you're looking at using 48 4' lamps in 24 fixtures of the F32T8 you should be around 115 lumens per square foot. I'm using F96T12 HO 110W lamps. If you use T8 HO lamps you can get higher lumens per bulb.

Thanks Fellas for taking the time to answer my questions. When buying lights, does it tell you some where on the light how maney lumens per squar foot the light puts out?

The packaging on the lamp will tell you the total lumen, not by sqft. You'll need to do the math. A single F32T8 lamp is about 2800 lumens (Lux). Most fixtures don't come with the lamps. There is a difference in the fixture if you plan to use HO lamps or regular lamps. You may want to go and look at some lamps first to see what lumen is available.

In your OP you said 24 fixtures which would be 48 lamps. If you use standard f32T8 lamps that would be around 134400 Lux. Divide that by 1200 SQFT is 112 Lux per sqft. That's a fair amount of light, I just like a little more.
