impact driver help

hey guys I'm a DIY when it comes to working on my truck and I seen a buddy use an impact driver to get bolt out without snapping them and make it a little faster.

I'm looking at a variable speed and single speed impact wrench. part of me says get the variable and part says get the single stage, the single stage comes with a regular drill for the same price. one impact has 1500 ftlbs and the other 1600.

whats your thoughts?

I like variable speed. I have the Milwaukee 2763 and I love it. 1500 or 1600 ft lbs is a lot be careful not to break stuff.

I think you are confused. Are you talking about an impact driver?

Or an impact wrench?

The impact driver has around 1500 inch pounds

The impact wrench has around 200 ft pounds and they vary in size the big Milwaukee impact has like 750 ft pounds

sorry guys, IMPACT DRIVER. idk why I said wrench.

these are the 2 I'm looking at.

craftsman 3 speed and craftsman drill/driver and impact driver combo.

they are in inch lbs not ft lbs. sorry.

I guess the single speed one you can pull the trigger lightly for light use or full blast. the 3 speed maxes out at a certain inch lbs.

I have 3 speed and single speed brushless hex impact drivers. I definitely like the 3 speed better. Low setting can be used on plastic interior parts. Medium for most things. High setting for lug nuts. The trigger is variable speed on both, but the three speed is definitely better.

IMHO, drill/drivers ****. Spend the money and get one of each, your will be happier in the long run.

Impact "drivers" usually come with 1/4" hex female drive. These are great for driving/removing deck screws and similar. You can get an adapter to 3/8" or 1/2" square for using socket on cars, but 1/4" impact drivers tend to have less torque and you lose some of hat in the adapter.

Impact "wrenches" (also called "guns" because they look like a gun) come in either 3/8" of 1/2" square. Most vendors sell a lower voltage model (around 12V) and a higher voltage model (18-20V).

If you want one tool to try to "cover as many bases as possible", I would get a name brand 12V or 18V 3/8" impact "gun" and a 1/4" hex adapter. If you think you will use it primarily for car repair, get the 3/8" 18V. More general use, get the 3/8" 12V. Getting a 3/8" drive will save you a lot on sockets.


The Milwaukee M12 Fuel or M18 Fuel seem to be the best out there at the moment.
