Impact wrench torque specs: Reality?

Do impact wrench torque specs represent real-world performance?

I work only on my own cars so my experience is limited.

I have a ten year old Husky 1/2" impact wrench rated at 500 ft lbs. Is there anything on a car that this would not be adequate for?

Rust, corrosion, etc. can greatly magnify the removal torque required of a fastener to crazy levels. Chances are though, that in those situations you'd need to apply kroil, heat, and a big breaker bar.
