Impulse Buy and its BIG

So I responded to a craigslist ad on a lathe with a couple of blurry pictures and a very decent price of $300. I called on it asking some sizes and knowing very little about lathes it sounded pretty big. (20" swing and 6' cut). Spent 2 hours trying to get loaded out of the barn with a skid loader and a tractor. Almost tipping it a couple of times.

Haven't had time to hook it up but the motor runs. Found a few pictures from a catalogue online from 1912 that looks identical.

It is absolutely crazy this machine probably helped with the world war 1 effort.
One of the gears is missing a couple teeth. Not for sure how to tell if it is steel or cast iron to look at the process of repairs. Anyone have any ideas?

Individual teeth can be built up with brass, or new gears can be made.
I want to know how you unloaded that myself. With the motor up high like that, lathes are very top heavy. Plus, the ground isn't level, and it's covered with snow.

Wow that is large, I once saw a guy build a new tooth on a gear by brazing a new one on. He just kept building up the brazing rod.

Awesome! I like your style... My wife still does not believe that any rational or sane man would buy a 4000lb 60 year old milling machine and pay to have it shipped 500 miles... Sight unseen.
We both have some classic American iron and I am looking forward to seeing more pics.

PS you have lots of options for tooth repairs,welding or dovetailed tooth repairs are a lot simpler on old low speed machines

It's a heck of a machine, if you have the work for it. Back in their day they were towards the top of what was out. Downside, especially now is you will be speed limited on smaller diameter work.

I don't plan on restoring it. Cleaning it and making it functional. I have the space for it to keep it functional. Just more of a lathe to play with and learn on. Should be some good time spent with my dad and grandpa. Grandpa is a millwright and is now retired so he could play around with it keep him busy. And if it is beyond repair could repurpose it.

I have the same lathe but mine has a longer bed. I would trade you in a heart beat it takes up alot of room. I gave $2000.00 for the one i have back before they got so cheap. My lathe has a 4speed box and motor that was put on it when they went electric. Its a good heavy lathe that will remove alot of metal.I didnt think about it being so old.

They way i unloaded mine. It was on a car trailer that was flat i jacked the tongue up till the back was on the ground then used a big comealong hook to the lathe to the back of the trailer so it would slide the lathe off but it pushed the trailer out from under it so when it got to the end i jacked up the lathe and pulled the trailer out. I layed 2 10' 1/2 buy 3" steel flat straps under it and oiled them up and used a pry bar to silde the lathe over to the wall.

that is an amazing lathe. Looks like it has a half nut lever so threading is a possibility. that would be a fantastic restoration project. Nice catch Congrats.

It is very rare here also. I have learned to be diligant on checking for sales.

The old way was to build up the broken gear with brass and file down.
If you can laser the gear that's a good start then you can file it smooth tot he point of functional. You can use the old gear for the pattern as well as to test fit and Lap it in

It's at my dads shop right now. I don't have space for it. This weekend will be wiring it up and functional testing of the components. Followed by a good cleaning with some degreaser. I am unsure what it would take to restore since the original didn't even have a motor just a common belt drive. I will snap some pics this weekend

If the broken teeth are on the back gear, you will want to get it repaired soon.
That is a common gear to lose teeth. It's probably cast iron. That puts the spindle RPM in the low range needed for most turning done on a lathe that size.
