I can override my rotary self-leveling with the push of a button +/-. I can fine tune it and dial it in to my desired pitch without touching the unit. I understand cross line gimbals can be locked but are you saying some of these non-rotaries will do what I stated above?
I'm a bit lost. You can't project a single dot with a cross line, though you can set a pair of lines to meet at a "dot", which is pretty much the same thing (though not as bright or focused). As for setting the cross line out of level to match existing construction, the usual use would be for a hand-rail, but with the laser turned on while the gimbal is locked, you can set it to whatever plane(s) you want.

Something tells me @KnurledNut laser has a dot laser + rotary

As for setting a angle, gimbal style isnt much of a problem. Its the rotary that typically have a smaller range of pitch they can handle

I have an expensive Topcon rotary that I picked up at auction and fixed.

I also have a cheap Ikovwuk brand 3 plane green laser that I bought from Amazon a couple years ago. I haven't touched the Topcon since I bought it.

I use the three plane on top of an old camera tripod I had. I find the three plane to be so useful for so many jobs. I've used it to set up frame pulls in my shop. I've used it with a surveyors stick to check the level of the floor in a room we were going to put new flooring in. Also to check the level of a concrete slab that was sinking. I used it to set some beams parallel in my basement and to level the posts holding them up.

I would highly recommend one of them. .
