I'm in the market for a nice socket set that includes 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 both in 6 and 12 point.

I was going to go ahead and get a craftsman set but after thinking maybe I should buy a Kobalt or Husky set from Lowes or Home Depot. I've been reading about all the hassle from people trying to get their tools warrantied from Sears I figured screw it. If I'm going to throw down some money I would like to have the peace of mind that comes along with it. Home Depot and Lowes seem to have no issues replacing damaged tools. I'm not one of those people that takes advantage and abuses the warranty policy, I just want the peace of mind.

And no I don't want to spend big $$$ on the bigger brand names.

What do you think? What would you do?

I have had no issues with returning stuff at sears.
You just pick out the items you need replaced walk up to the counter and they switch them out for you.
Unconditional Satisfaction Guarantee, no if's and's or but's
I guess it depends on the people working at sears.

Craftsman and Kobalt are both made by Danaher and for all practical purposes, their sockets are identical. The Craftsman sets can be purchased for much better prices than the Kobalt, however. I'd get one of the sets that are sockets only, no ratchets or other items. That way you can get a ratchet you like instead of the Craftsman ratchets that come with their sets, which are not very good ratchets. Something along the lines of this set:

Or for less than $400, you can buy a set with every size Craftsman socket that Sears sells.

Husky is Chinese these days, unfortunately. I've never had a problem with Sears warranty on their Craftsman hand tools. Like others have said, just find your replacement item, take it to the counter with your broken one and exchange them.
