Install Surge Protector on Subpanel or AC Disconnect?

Hi all,

I am installing a mini-split for my small workshop and I want to protect it from power surges.

I installed a subpanel in the workshop. The AC disconnect box is on the opposite side of the wall from the subpanel.

Should I install the surge protector as the first device in the subpanel or in the AC disconnect box? The subpanel and disconnect box are only inches away from each other, so does it matter?

Put it as close to the mini as possible, usually that's at the disconnect. In your case not sure if it matters, but as close as possible to the ac is the best way.

I agree that it is best to put it as close to the AC as possible. But given that the disconnect is just inches away from the panel (on the other side of the wall), would it be better to install as the first device in the panel so that everything in the panel is surge protected, as well as the AC?

Another vote for a whole panel unit at the panel.

I put one at the main panel and added one in each HVAC unit along with the two 100 amp sub panels for the shop and garage……….. I also installed one one the KOHLER generator transfer switch.

Over kill? YES!…….. Cheap insurance as far as I am concerned.

As far as the OP's question, I suggest installing the protector in the main panel.
