Installing Speedometer on mountain bike

Hello everyone,

I'm trying to install an analog speedometer as seen in cars/motorcycles on my mountain bike; just a little project I'm working on. Basically, I found a universal motorcycle odometer/speedometer on Amazon.

Now, I will be riding at night as well and the speedometer does have 2 cables running from the back. It says that it requires DC 12V. Would I be able to just use a 12v battery pack for that and solder the 2 wires to the battery pack? Or is DC 12V something different? Sorry, I'm a newbie when it comes to electronics.

You'll either want a switch or a plug, so you can disconnect the battery when it's not being used and to charge/replace it when it's low. What battery are you trying to use?

This my speedo, cobbled together from some garage sale items. I like it because it reads in MPH and miles. It is not back lit, I carry a small flash light to see it, if riding in the dark.







Yours could have a LED bulb installed, that is why they call for 12DC. I have these bulbs on hand, and could check to see what the minimum voltage needed to operate is, if you like. That way a couple of AA or a 9V might work.
