Hi everyone! I'm halfway through building my garage and I've learned a lot. I've been a lurker here until now, you've all been very helpful. The biggest lesson I have learned is that I need to speak up more when things seem off. I've had a couple major hiccups already and the issues were things on my radar screen from my own research. So now I'm just going to be more aggressive in my research so here I am picking your brains.
My project is a 28x30 garage with a bonus room upstairs. The room is going to be finished office space. I am installing a woodstove on the main floor, a spiral staircase to get upstairs and there is going to be outside stairs and a deck to get up to that second floor. My plan for heat/AC for the second floor is a mini split heat pump. The spiral staircase opening will also be open year round and next to the wood stove so I imagine I won't have any trouble moving heat up; the stove I have is big. (I'm in Connecticut so we do get cold in winter). I mostly need the downstairs to stay above freezing most of the time and want the option to have it comfortable too so I don't feel like I need much more than the wood stove downstairs.
I'm planning to insulate the entire structure and ideally I want to use Roxul. I have 2x4 walls downstairs and 2x6 ceiling joists. The bonus room runs down the center of the building.
So just want to make sure what I have in my head is the best way to insulate this structure .... insulate walls downstairs. Insulate the entire ceiling of the first floor. Insulate the walls of the bonus room. Insulate the entire roof or just the part of the roof that goes over the finished room? I think I'm only supposed to do the part over the bonus room but this is what is not clear to me!
Also someone told me I do not need a vapor barrier with Roxul?
Also ... garage doors are not installed yet, there is a tarp covering one bay but I'm using the other side to get my work vehicle out of the snow (shell is done including roof). Do I need to button up tight if there is a delay between insulation and drywall? Now that the shell is done this project is getting "picked away at" so that I can cash flow everything. I'm having some moisture issues with the slab (whole slab might get ripped up and replaced ugh) and there is a crack in the foundation wall that has water coming through (ugh ugh). I'm hoping landscaping can help deal with a lot of this water issue but the last thing I want is for one problem to worsen another problem. Will have electricity soon and I can run a dehumidifier ... I know this sounds like a big "oh by the way" ... but here I am! lol. I need to get the ceiling up before I can install the garage doors and I'd really like to get the doors on! Don't really want to cash flow the entire insulation and drywall part until the cement slab issue is resolved. I tried attaching photos but i'm having no luck. I'll try again in a reply to this thread.
