Getting ready to check out of the hotel this morning, I noticed this thing. What is it?

Just a "tamper" resistant switch so people don't play with the switch.

Think public bathrooms .

Interestingly (and off topic) these Leviton tamper resistant switches always reminded me of the old Italian plugs (which are amazingly safe compared to almost anything in use today around the world).

For a split second I always think pushing in that Leviton metal key is going to end in a bad day .

I've seen the tamper resistant switches with the vertical slots. This is the first one seen that looked (vaguely) like a receptacle. Thanks!

Tamper resistant switches have been around for years. They serve to keep mischief minded children from messing with things they shouldn’t.

Been around for a while for sure. I have a box of all my dad's tools from about that time and there must have been 15 different styles of these keys.

I have a collection of tamper resistant keys I've gathered over the years as well. I can also open most napkin and TP dispensers in bathrooms, which came in handy during the time that shall not be named.

Keyed light switch that uses a key like this to operate. Common in schools, jails, and commercial facilities where they don't want you messing with the lights.
