Interesting Craftsman "slant drill"

Good old craigslist. Looking for another project and found this old drill press. Interesting. Radial drill with no table. Obviously for wood working, but no table? I haven't ever seen one like this and have no use for it, but find it interesting. Anybody have one?

Delta also made a better version of the light duty radial drill. They're only for woodworking as they deflect too much when pulled hard into steel. Your needs and opinions may vary, but there are many better machines out there to be had for not much more money. That Craftsman is just sad; I wouldn't give it shop space were it free. ;>)

Pretty critical opinions.

Obviously, the way it's built, the deeper the throat, the more flex.

It has it's purposes, and for the $, I like it.

And USA made.

O, and my drill press is a restored Delta/ Rockwell "17" ". Marc

I keep looking at it and wondering how much disappointment it has added to everything it has ever touched... and if it had some brightly coloured plastic shrouds in a previous life...perhaps they were UV damaged when it was left out in the rain for 10 years?? I also admire the twist in the alignment between the motor and head.... that there is probably a patent pending belt tensioning method

Delta/Rockwell made a very similar one, which I bought for my first drill press. I actually didn't love it -- too much flex in the columns to be very accurate. I replaced it with a Clausing 16" drill press, which is much, much more rigid.

Agree . . . that C-Man drill press project looks hopeless.
