IR raises the bar for compact impacts again

Looks like they stole the crown from Metabo for the most powerful compact impact, and not by a small margin either.

550 ft-lbs nutbusting torque (and "only" 365 ft-lbs forward torque) in a 5 lb package is pretty awesome (Metabo is still lighter @ 4.2 lbs but only musters 300 ft-lbs in either direction), it looks short too @ 6.5". LED setup looks much improved too.

The four torque settings look useful too; the Metabo has 11 settings, but the minimum torque is ~ 60 ft-lbs (whereas the IR "hand-tight" is 2-9 ft-lbs).

All this new brushless development is exciting. Hopefully the rest of the companies respond by getting more lighter, compact impacts on the market. I had the W7150 and didn't care for it's bulk and weight, the smaller impact is a much more versatile tool.

Nut busting torque is the marketing number and is kind of meaningless. Real advertised torque is 365 in reverse and 340 in forward. Still good numbers though.

They also incorporated the power dial of their air tools into it for forward torque control. Like the air tools reverse bypasses the dial and always delivers full torque. Should be released in August.

Problem for them will continue to be trying to break into a market with entrenched owners loyal to long established brands. Its nice but to me its not $400 and start another cordless platform nice.

Everyone wants to brag about the nut busting torque, which is impressive; however, I believe there is much more to this tool than this. Much of the magic is in the ergonomics and functionality.

The dial on the cordless model is able to give the user 4 different measured settings - hand-tight, wrench-tight, half-power, and full-power. Being able to use the impact to run bolts in on a valve cover, trans pan, oil pan, etc without over-tightening is a huge benefit.

Pretty neat, but $550 from Amazon, with only a single 5.0 battery, and a 2.5 battery, and I think I'll pass. The power is definitely impressive and would be handy to have, but that's just too rich for my blood.

I think at that price I'd rather go for the Hilti 18T-A. Heavy sucker but the power is all there and never failed at breaking out nuts and bolts (even dry, rusty ones from a junkyard at that).

im still not sold on brushless technology large auto makers tried it with alternators and they didnt last the life span was 15-20% compared to a regular alternator,

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you, but Milwaukee has sold a metric buttload of Fuel and Compact Brushless tools and you don't hear of widespread failure with them.

I like that the IR has the offset nose where the Metabo's is parallel with the battery/base. That simple design feature allows a lot more access in tight spots.

I would love this but I'm already vested in the M12/M18 platform. Spending $500+ on a single use platform doesn't make sense since I already have the Milwaukee 2763 and 2454. I'll wait for Milwaukee to release something similar.

This is where battery adapters would be awesome. Use my M18 batteries on other tools.

I really like this tool! I especially like the control dial and the hand tight and wrench tight options.

The two things holding me back are the price and it comes with a bag instead of a case. I really hate it when nice tools come just in a bag...seems like a cheap way out.

I like it because then you have the option of throwing a few extra tools into the bag and having one thing to grab and go, which you can't do without cutting up and destroying a plastic case. Granted, it's probably a small bag and you wouldn't be able to throw very many extras into it, but that's more than you'd be able to throw into a plastic case that only holds the tool and battery, a spare battery and a charger.

Yes, they run on the same IQV20 batteries as the W7150.

Thanks for the reply, General Geoff. I may be purchasing myself one of these impacts.
My 7150 cooked the switch a few years ago, so I took it apart and scraped the burnt plastic off of the contact surface for a temporary solution. Still have not got a new switch for it. And it is big and heavy, so the switch replacement money may go toward one of these.

Thanks again.

Anybody got a link to prices? Can't seem to find anything myself. I think the compact size would be beneficial plus the different setting sound interesting.

I got the W5152 1/2 drive model with one 5.0 battery yesterday. I have the cordless hammerhead so I already have this platform.

I have the Milwaukee brushless M18 1/2" high torque and 3/8" compact that I use all the time. The 1/2" gets used everyday.

I bought the IR to have a more powerful compact 1/2" so I don't have to lug the big Milwaukee around.

The IR is impressive. The main reason I bought it is for wheel removal and to use the lighter setting to install and then hand torque. It take wheels off with ease. Today I also used it on strut bolts and an axle nut. It removed both without any problem.

It's a well made impact and the light is awesome. You can set it for different brightness levels and keep it on as a work light if you want.

I think this impact can replace the Milwaukee high torque for the majority of work I do.

This is a really impressive impact. We did a full review it really excelled. I am most impressed with size and the hand/wrench tight modes.

Here is a picture comparing the sizes of the Milwaukee 3/8" and 1/2" to the IR.

I have not used the Milwaukee 1/2" since getting the IR. I love it.

The only negative I have about the IR is the noise it makes when impacting. It seems like a different pitch and is hard on the ears more so than the Milwaukee.

The light is the best I've seen in a tool.

Yeah the 2763 can do just about anything or shear it off trying, but it's damn heavy and fairly bulky for regular use. Good to see IR striving for compactness.

That said, no way I'm investing in the IR platform but looks like great stuff.
