We must not be looking at the same ratcheting wrenches because Pittsburgh has a line out that is identical to Gear Wrench...

He is probably not talking about the same ones, because you're right, they are almost identical to GearWrench. At my HF they keep them locked up in the back and you have to ask for them (if you even know they're there).

Because of the HF wrenches "looking" identical, I went and checked them out the other day. While they did look the same the ratcheting aspect of the wrench "sounded/felt" different; as shown in the posted patent schematics, it is possible the ratcheting mechanisms could be different, even though the bodies look similar. When turning the wrenches at the store the mechanism seem to be lower quality; this is just how it felt to me. I don't own any so, I can't really say for sure but I did check them out based on peoples experiences on this board. With the 50% off sales at Sears coming up pretty often, I think the price differential is such that I will stick with Gearwrench; just my opinion.

Are we reading the same posts? The general consensus around here is to buy quality with less regard for price!

Generally you get what you pay for. The quality tools generally cost more, so some think the more you pay, the better the tool, which is not always true. Snap-on is a prime example. You pay for the name plus 200%, but get no better than any of a dozen other manufactures, but head and shoulders over some of the tools I have seen come out of China.

I have to agree with you. Last year I saw a set of Chinese ratcheting combo wrenches that were in every respect identical to my GRAY set. If there were not a name on them ,no one would be able to tell which is which. Against my better judgment I purchased an SAE set to go with my metric set. Within a week I returned them because the ratcheting end kept on binding to the point that I had to bang it on the table to free it up. It happened on three of the 10 wrenches. The feel of the mechanism was totally different.

Moral is that even though they may look the same, they are not always the same.

Identical looks do not make the tool the same.
