It was a good day for vintage rusty tools.

I found a run down home having a garage sale whereby the Father had died and the son was selling all the contents off. Most of the contents in my mind should have put in the dumpster but I regress.

I spied a rusty old tool box filled with tons of rust (thank you nurse Ratched for that tetanus shot). Now normally I pass on tools with that much rust but for some reason that small voice in the back of my head kept telling me a lot of the small items had that mid 1950 look so buy those rusty tools.

After breathing in enough rust my life lost a few years but I bought a few small plomb wrenches, one of which was a small open end plomb pebble, three small bonney wrenches and a few mid 1950 craftsman wrenches. After cleaning a few chisels and punches from a ton of rust the name Bonney appeared

The reason for this post is the one ratchet when taken apart had several metal gear chips fall out making the ratchet useless.

After a quick check I found the model in the 1954 craftsman catalog marked as 9c 4429 and had a original selling price of $3.40.

I am not up on model numbers (too many) but do the sell any repair kits for something this old???

If not would any other gear fit this vintage model???

Should I throw it in the junk pile, look for another used model,or any other ideas like maybe someone has and old gear they want to sell?

Just a few pictures as I can not take cleaning any more today that rust is killing me!

Nice find on the punches/chisels. Very rare that I find Bonney ones. I see plenty that I "think" are Bonney but the stamps are always illegible. I think I have 2 in total

I do enjoy digging through rusty tools though!! Nice snags.

I have the same model that too, is in need of a repair kit. The only way you can find them is NOS or to salvage from another ratchet. I've had a post on the wanted forum for months with no responses to find a repair kit.

Nice find! I think I read somewhere that Craftsman ratchet was made by Moore Drop Forging. I found the same one recently at the flea.
Very nice to find the Bonney punches and chisels. I would like to see some pics of the Bonney wrenches when you have a chance to clean them as well.

I bought a nice one off ebay for about $15 shipped. I needed it to fill in a spot in my mid-50's Craftsman wall cabinet. You could pick up a donor ratchet on the cheap if you could verify the gears are good, which could be a tall order of course. Good luck

I do know that in 1973 when I worked for New Britain our forgings were made by Storms Drop Forge in Springfield, Mass. At that time Craftsman owned Moore Drop Forge also in Springfield, Mass. Storms learned a few manufacturing "secrets" by seeing Moore's scrap at the scrap yard.
Just something for your gee whiz file.

Everybody thanks for all your help good job!

I stink at math but if I did it right I paid $15.00 dollars for 55 small items (tools) divided by 15=.272= 15 dollars so about .27 per item so I figure I am not out much money if I can not find another gear.

Bonney tools are one of my favorites. Usually pretty hard to find. I go out of my way to find Bonney.

That ratchet looks like it will clean up pretty nice (not rusty or excessively worn). I would keep an eye out for a cruddy, rusty looking example to scavenge for parts. I buy cheap Craftsman ratchets for parts whenever I find them. Better one is fixed to use than both are scrapped.

if you want to get your ratchet up and going, you would most likely fare well to find a donor ratchet for parts.

Does anyone know who manufactured these for Craftsman? If one is to find a donor ratchet, I would prefer it not be another Craftsman.

Never hurts to drop by the local sears. Sometimes they have a stash of older stuff in one of the stores around. Just let them know you want it back if not fixable.

Sears dropped that repair kit many years ago. Some times you will find nos on ebay.

The trick is knowing what the P/N is for that ratchet in question. Someone once posted a relativity full list on GJ...
