Welcome to GJ!!! Awesome woodworking shop!! I'm hoping to make my shop look anywhere near that good!

Big question on your dust collection barrel...what does it feed into...standard dust collector or shop vac?? Can't see it leading anywhere?? Also how do you handle blast gating with all the hoses feeding directly into the barrel? I like the setup, as I'm planning a central core area like that with dust collection in the center...just want to know more about how it works...

Welcome to the forum! Although I do like how neat your woodworking benches and set up looks, I like the old "garage" setup better! lol But its all about what works best for you! Nice place and have fun with it!

Thx for the details!! I've already been to your fotki site and looked over most of your shop pics! Awesome!! I'm currently putting the final connections on my first attempt at dust collection for the table saw, but I'll definitely be considering your blast gate setup as I add more machines to the system! So far I've only done random projects and just swept up the shop afterwards, but will be making copious amounts of sawdust very soon, as I'm planning to start doing some serious hobby work and hopefully selling stuff as I get better at it. I found it really interesting to see the progression of your shop in pics over a few years.

I'm also blown away with the wooden model stuff. That's right up my alley! I'm looking to build lots of smaller items like jewelry boxes, cutting boards, birdhouses, etc, but I definitely want to work up to making some models too. That is just great work!!

Bret...you're shop really gives me something to aim for! I can't wait til I can start building stuff in and making custom cabinets and such for my stuff. And your models are just awesome!! Anyone who says you don't still work on cars and trucks in your garage is just nuts!! I'm still watching the Scania build on the other forum too!

Awesome lathe! That tool has soul..you can actually see it in the pics! Nothing like working with your dad's or granddad's tools...that's as good as it gets! I can also imagine all the custom parts you'll make with it! Enjoy!

Very nice! I just bought a Kreg jig to build my cabinets. Can't wait to get going. Was planning this week to start but pulled my back. Been on the floor since. Well I'll just study your cabinets a bit more for ideas? BTW have you ever used the wooded kits by Grizzley? They seem pretty nice? Not in the league of yours but nice.

I want to welcome a new family member to the Woodshop. A Craftsman Wood Lathe. My Uncle gave this to me. It was my Grandpa's. He bought it used in 1970 when he opened his machine shop. Im not certain of the vintage but from the small research I have done I think it is a 1930's era. Someone with more knowledge I'm sure can chime in. Red Leader you might know more about it. It has a 1/2 hp Dayton motor. The bench it is on was also made by my Grandpa. So this thing is not only cool because it is vintage and good quality but it also is sentimental to me. Enough talk here are the photos.


Here it is as received.

It has a cross vise so it can be used for metal as well.

After a little cleanup. Took off the jig my Uncle had on it and put the cross vise back on.

Its in good working order everything works and nothing is seized up. The way has no slop and the cross vise is real tight. Now Im going to go make some dust with it!

Hey now hey now! Everyone knows that is a late 1930s to early 1940s 9" lathe made by Atlas (manufacturer code 101), so I thought there would be no need to respond too soon

Seriously though, nice lathe. I am a big fan of Craftsman AND also Atlas Press Co...so having them both rolled into one tool is double the pleasure

Right now I've got a big honkin' lathe (GTD), but I'll probably downsize to a lathe like this at some point to get a little bit more room. The fact that it comes with some accessories is the icing on the cake. I'm betting that cross vise is a pretty rare accessory.

However, I wouldn't use that vise for much else other than wood or maybe turning small brass rods. Even the full-on metal lathes from Atlas re-badged as a Craftsman were not known for being ultra stout, so much more so for a wood lathe. Still though, beautiful tool sir! I, for one, am a fan!

Growing up my family had a furniture business and they had an Itailan Cabinet maker that used to divide and compartmentlize everything, very organized and a thrill to watch work. Nice shop.
