Junction Boxes in Attic without covers

In my pole barn, the PO didn't put covers on the junction boxes in the attic. Wiring is 12 ga in EMT and the drops go to 120V/20amp duplex outlets in the wall. See the picture.

I have added blown in cellulose insulation to the attic and its a few inches below the boxes. I'm now wondering if there is a danger of a spark from an uncovered box igniting the insulation?

Adding covers would be a PIA since the boxes are near the eaves, I would have to crawl out to those and would also compress the new insulation. Trusses are on 4' centers and are covered by the insulation. Since the walls are not yet insulated and sheathed, it would be easier to disconnect the EMT circuit and run romex through the wall if its really a fire hazard

Code requires the boxes to have covers installed.

Call the PO and have him fix it.
It should have been done right the first time.

If you close your eyes and think hard enough, covers will appear on the JBs. Really, just install covers PITA or not. Simple solution. The real question is: Did you know this before you had the insulation installed?

I'd be shocked if the boxes weren't full of insulation or at least had some cellulose in there

The real reason for a cover is to protect you and the wires from each other and to prevent things like rats from chewing on them, not to encase sparks. JB's can be found in 1000's of locations serving the purpose of being a pull box or splice or both. They should not be concealed under any other surface and should be accessible. That right there is one of the problems you face.

If you feel you must cover them just because that's what the code says (not to mention the rats), put some silicone sealant on a cover and reach over to the box with the cover in fork type of gizmo and deposit it one the box. Adjust for square and be done with it. The 2 screws that hold the cover in place could probably be replaced with a snap in device like the way a vacant knock out is covered. I see no law that the covers can't be attached by alternative means other than screws.

BTW, most JB's are the non weather proof type and have plenty of holes punched in them when manufactured. Technically, a spark could fire right through one of the holes, although not likely. But, that is why they are not "spark arrestors."
