I have one of those GE Spacemaker Microwave/Convection Ovens/ Exhaust fan combos above my electric range. It sits on the wall that has the garage on the other side. The vent currently comes out of the back of the GE combo (rectangular vent 12 inches x 3 inches), does a 90 degree uptake of about 24 inches (inside the wall), does another 90 degree (into an 8 inch round vent pipe) into the soffit above the cabinet and then an immediate 90 degree to the left (as you are looking at the front of the GE combo), and then runs about 50 inches (again 8 inch vent pipe), then exits outside.
I'm in the planning stage of remodeling the kitchen and was planning to eliminate the soffit above the cabinet and therefore will need to re-run the exhaust vent piping. Since the ceiling joists run in the same direction I could probably run the exhaust vent up from the GE combo - thru the cabinet, turn left 90 degrees and run the 50 inches between the joists and exit outside. I'd have to move the exit vent cover about 10-12 inches up and loose some cabinet space (because of the vent passing thru it) but I'd eliminate two 90 degree turns in the piping and maybe get better air flow.
Was wondering:
1) Can I run the vent out the back of the GE Combo thru the wall into the garage, turn left 90 degrees and then run 30inches and exit to the outside. Of course the vent pipe in NOW in the garage but it will be there next to the radon reduction piping.
2) Is there is a standard size vent pipe to use? My bathroom exhaust fan is rated at 110 CFMs and I'm using a 4 inch vent pipe and the air moves pretty quick)? The GE Combo is rated at 400 CFMs.
3) Do I have to use solid metal ducting? What about the PVC or something else?
