When installing individual incandescent-type lampholders to round plastic ceiling boxes, does a metal mounting strap need to be used, or can it be mounted directly to the box? If mounted to the box, there's no place for the ground to go. Thanks in advance!

It should go to your ground wire in the box. Almost all I have seen have the ground screw on the lamp holder, then run your ground wire to it.

If you are using the ceramic or plastic type single incandesant bulb holders, there is no ground lug on the holder. In that case just tie the ground in your supply cable (assuming you are using standard NMD90) to the ground screw in the plastic box. Some boxes have a metal strap that goes from under the ground screw to one of the holes that you screw your bulb holder into. This would only be good though if you have a metal cover plate as part of a lamp assembly. Personally I prefer to use a metal octagon box for this application.

With no exposed metal surfaces, nothing to get a shock from - therefore no need for a ground.
Let me make sure I have it right: I can mount the lampholder directly to the box, and do not need to connect a ground to anything. I understand that there would be no need for the ground; it just seems like I must be missing something, so I want to clarify before I do the installation. Thanks for your help!

That is correct - there are no conductive surfaces to ground. Nothing to get a shock from (unless you stick your finger in the lamp socket!!).
The ground wire should be left there though in case you ever want to replace the plastic lampholder with a different type of fixture that needs to use a ground.

I used the little brass fittings (crimps) to tie my grounds together (like I did with all my runs), then left a pigtail in case I ever do different lights. Then I just pushed the grounds up and out of the way.
